Young Tomás and his family travel from Texas to Iowa for long days working in the fields, followed by nights listening to his grandfather’s stories. After being told there are more stories in the library, Tomas meets the local library lady who introduces him to books and all the places they can take him. Based on the true story of Mexican American author and educator Tomás Rivera, the story illustrates how his love of books leads to a lifetime of curiosity and learning. Writing his own success story, Tomás becomes the first person of color to become Chancellor of the University of California Riverside which is home to the school library that bears his name.
